Carlos Monzón was born on August 7, 1942, in San Javier,
province of Santa Fe, Arge As an amateur boxer he fought 87 fights, won 78, lost 8 and tied 6. He was a middleweight boxer who began his professional career in 1963 and got his first international middleweight tiltle in 1970 (after defeating Nino Benvenuti). He defended his title 14 times and was able to hold on to it until he retired in 1977. His supremacy was the longest of the category lasting 6 years and 10 months. He defended his title and managed to unify it, obtaining the title of the World Association and the World Council, which at that moment was in Valdez's hands. As a professional boxer, Carlos Monzon fought 102 fights, won 90, tied 9 and lost 3 (for points). After he retired, he was convicted in the killing of his wife in 1988 and was sentenced to eleven years in jail; but died seven years later in a car accident while on parole.
